Fencing is a centuries-old sport said to have originated in ancient Egypt. Modern fencing has its roots in the sword fights and duels of Italy, Spain and France.
Our weapon, the epee, has moved from the battlefield and the dueling grounds to the highly competitive world of sport.
In 1936, épée was the first weapon to use an electrical scoring apparatus, with an audible tone and a red or green light indicating when a touch landed. The scoring box allows more accurate scoring of faster actions and lighter touches. In epee, the entire body is valid target reminding us of our origins as a dueling sport.
Roswell High School began fencing in 2003, and it was the first school in Fulton County to have a team. That being the case of course we only fenced ourselves! In 2004 we had our first interscholastic match against Peachtree Ridge.
In 2005 the Georgia High School Fencing League was founded, and this year we have 15 schools participating in the interscholastic tournaments.
